Every year brings new opportunities to discover new technological inventions that can bring improvements to our daily lives. Many of the most talked-about was discovered many decades ago, but been fitted into practical and innovative applications recently. India has picked up more pace in innovation by leveraging its strong software skills and improvising its hardware capabilities. Let us now go through the greatest inventions of all time, that the world should thank India for.
1. Ancient Dentistry
Man’s first know dentistry took place about 9,000 years ago (7,000 BC). When few people living in Neolithic villages from ancient India had holes drilled into their molars. While excavating the Mehrgarh site currently western Pakistan, molars of 300 people covered in graves are found. Which is accepted to be the most established Stone Age complex in the Indus River valley. This validates the fact that Dentistry was followed in India many centuries ago.
2.The Zero:
Zero literally means nothing, but it is considered the most important contribution to the history of mathematics. We may think about what difference will the invention of Zero make to our lives… Without the existence of 0, there would have been no binary system, subsequently no computers. Ever wondered about life without computers?? Impossible right?
Aryabhata invented Zero as early as during the Gupta period 5th century (between 476 A.D. and 550 A.D.). The rules governing the use of zero appeared for the first time in Brahmagupta’s Brahmasputha Siddhanta (7th century). Aryabhata is also known for giving the approximate value of pie.
3. Cataract Surgery:
Indian physicians were known to practice a different kind of cataract surgery than that known to the Greeks in about 200 BC. It was performed with a tool called the Jabamukhi Salaka, a curved needle used to loosen the lens and push the cataract out of the field of vision. Using this tool, cataract surgeries were been done in India. Greek scientists of the time traveled to India to see these surgeries, and the technique was even introduced into China from our country. This is how the method of conducting cataract surgery spread around the world.
4. Yoga:
International Yoga Day is celebrated on the 21st of June every year. Yoga is been practiced in India for over 5000 years. The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, suggested the date of 21 June, as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares a special significance in many parts of the world. Yoga is developed in such a way so we can achieve harmony and balance between the heart and soul. Most importantly, it also helps us to achieve divine enlightenment. The origins of yoga have been dated back to the pre-Vedic traditions of India, and it is also mentioned in the Rigveda.
5. Wireless Communication:
Guglielmo Marconi has been credited as the inventor of wireless radio communication. Subsequently, he received the 1909 Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy. But the first demonstration of the use of radio waves for communication was made by an Indian Scientist ~ Jagadish Chandra Bose. Bose first demonstrated the use of radio in Calcutta, in 1895, two years before a similar demonstration by Marconi in England. More than a century after the feat, Bose has been belatedly credited for his achievement. Moreover, Bose’s revolutionary demonstration forms the foundation of the technology used in mobile telephony, radars, satellite communication, radios, television broadcast, WiFi, remote controls, and countless other applications that play a central role in our daily lives.
Ayurveda, Board Games, Shampoo, Rulers, Microwave communication, Ancient Democracy, Water on the moon, are various other great inventions that India must be thanked for. Did I miss something out? do drop them in the comments section down.
